Dr. Ann Gregory (VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology) (online)

As guest of the CRC 1182 (host: Malte Rühlemann)

Dr. Ann Gregory

VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology
Raes lab: Laboratory of Bioinformatics and (Eco)-Systems Biology

Talks about:

Exploring viral diversity from the global oceans to the human gut.

Microbes drive most ecosystems and are modulated by viruses that impact their lifespan, gene flow, and metabolic outputs. Studies of viruses in the environment, however, were long limited because of a lack of a universal species definition. In this talk, I will first discuss how the viral ecology field came together to nominate a viral species definition in double-stranded DNA viruses. Then, I will talk about how this definition has been applied to study patterns of viral diversity within the global oceans to the human gut.
